A Case of papillary Carcinoma Orginated from Lateral Aberrant Thyroid

Abstract
The thyroid cancer is usually manifested as nodules in the main thyroid gland or occasionally as metastatic neck mass. In the case initially the lateral neck mass in found and proven as thyroid cancer, the same pathologic lesions are usually
found
in
the ipsilateral lobe of the main thyroid gland. The case that any microscopic pathologic lesions are not identified in the main thyroid gland is very rare. The latter case suggest that thyroid cancer can be originated primarily from the ectopic
thyroid
tissues of lateral neck, so called 'lateral aberrant thyroid'.
The possibility of metastatic or aberrant thyroid cancer must be kept in mind in cases of neck mass in middle aged women.
Recently we exprienced a case of papillary carcinoma originated from the lateral aberrant thyroid without specific pathologic lesions in main thyroid gland. This tumor was initially misdiagnosed as neurogenic tumor due to its location. (Korean J
